I have an 04 Grand am and it was giving me some troubles and I have a friend who is a mechanic and he took off my fuel tank because he thought it was my fuel pump..Well he couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it so I put it in the shop they fixed it and it has been at least 2 months since it has been fixed but it smells like gas everytime I drive it only behind the back wheels. We took it to the shop again and they said nothing was wrong with it.Ive washed it a thousand times but it still smells like gas everytime I drive it..Why would it smell like that? and is there a way to make it stop smelling that way?? Please help XOXO
Answer:
When you remove a fuel pump from a tank for inspection or replacement and reinstall it, there is a rubber O-ring that should seal the fuel pump/sending unit to the tank. If there is any dirt or rust in between the rubber and the tank it can seep fuel and could be the cause of the smell. It also could be one of the fuel lines that go to the fuel pump on top of the tank which you can not see until you drop the tank down and look. Either way you need to have this looked at by the shop that fixed it. something is still seeping fuel, and I`m sure it is worst when you fill it up, if so fill it then bring it in and show them, “it smells like fuel” and then they should repair it, for free if you already paid them for the prior repair. I hope this will help you out some Good Luck.
