I know it uses the 30mm gatling gun, but do the bullets simply penetrate the tanks armor or is there more to it than that?

Answer:
I dont know where people get this idea that the 30mm rounds can penetrate the most armored areas of a tank. They cant. The 30mm round can penetrate about 60mm of armor at 1000m, which means it actually chews up all of the weaker parts of the tank. It can disable a tank by destroying less armored components that are still vital to operation of the tank, such as the engine and tracks, along with any viewing equipment. If it manages to hit the fuel, it doesnt matter if it can pierce the main armor, because the tank cannot survive being ignited. The USAF claims an average of 6 hits to disable a target.
