Three-quarters of all Americans think that the federal government should let General Motors or Chrysler go bankrupt rather than pumping more money into the struggling automakers, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll — and most now say that the economy would not face major problems if those companies went into bankruptcy.

Answer:
American cars or cars made by a company run by American Executives? There are 3 cars in my driveway, each with a Japanese name, but each was manufactured in the USA by US workers. The last car I traded in had an American nameplate, but it was made in Canada. So what is American, eh? Every manufacturer selling vehicles in the USA is guilty of building gas guzzling SUVs and pick-up trucks. So, that is not the reason for the woes of the big three. The criticism of labor unions has alot of merit. Don’t get me wrong, I think workers rights must be protected, but when the unions demand pay for no productivity, something is very wrong. (For example, in the past 6 months, many automobile plants were temporarily shut down because of low product demand, but the manufacturer still had to pay the idled workers full pay and benefits. How much sense does THAT make?) Executives who receive big bonuses for poor performance is even worse. The production worker who makes a number of mistakes is shown the door. The executives who makes critical mistakes costing $millions is rewarded for his misdeeds with a “goldem parachute” and then goes to work down the street. Can the big three make good cars? Absolutely! Do they have a bad reputation? Yes! Should a car buyer make a decision based upon a reputation? I’ll let you answer that.
