I got an ’01 wrangler that has a check engine light. I ran diagnostics on it and got error code 0345, small emissions leak. It’s not the gas cap, and I disconnected the battery to reset the computer….a day later it was on again. Any suggestions what to check? I’m trying to avoid taking it in. Thanks for any suggestions. …on another note, the day after the first occurance it overheated and the radiator was dry…I’m aware of a small leak in there, could that be related? Also, I understand the urgency of the coolant system, however, is the emission leak what you would call an “urgent” need to fix? Funds are a little low at the moment, and as suggested, the mtn dew fix might have to do for a while. my bad, it was 0456…whatever the small emission leak is. Thanks, TRM, unfortunately I already bought a new fuel cap and put it on, so I don’t think that’s the issue. Also, I forgot about it, but had that code 0455 (Gross evap. emission leak). Going by that thread I guess I’m going to have to do some hose checks as well as the muffler……one more thing, are the hoses checked in the same manner? meaning will I be able to feel some pressure/exhaust as you mentioned in the muffler?

Answer:
I would address the leak in the coolant system first, that can kill your engine fast. Once you have that under control, look under the Jeep with the engine running, check the exhaust pipe for air coming out. Remember it will be/is hot so don’t touch, but you should still be able to feel the exhaust coming out with your hand near the leak. Check around the muffler, and Cat Converter, sometimes the seams of those parts can rot and exhaust can leak out. If you find a small hole in the pipe, here is how you can fix it. I did this with my old car when I was in college and needed money for beer not car repairs. I cut an old Mt. Dew can and made an aluminum patch, then “glued” it to the pipe, covering the hole, using JB Weld epoxy. You can get JB Weld at any home depot, lowes, or hardware store, for about $5. That held up for about 6 months, by then I had enough to get it replaced. Good luck, and get that coolant looked at ASAP! *** I very highly doubt that it is urgent to have fixed, unless your vehicle needs to be inspected soon, and your state has emissions test. check out this jeep forum, they address your problem, and I think you might like the answer: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=553350 Good Luck!
